GTS Students tackle the Chiefs!

On Sunday 20th March, the Great Torrington School Rugby Teams and Torrington RFC took 58 young players to take part in the Exeter Chiefs Super Sunday.

The day involved an early leave (6.00am) which was quite hard for some parents on a Sunday morning!   Upon arrival we were greeted by the Exeter Chiefs' community coaches who put us straight into a training on the Chiefs' training pitch.  We were then in for a treat as they took us on a tour of the facilities and behind the scenes; we saw the changing rooms with all  the match day kit laid out, the ice bath, the gymnasium and the physio room.   A great experience to then walk out of the players' tunnel!

During lunch, the youngsters had the opportunity to buy some Exeter Chiefs merchandise such as balls, calendars and shirts, which they were thrilled to have signed by the players after the match.

After lunch, we took our position on the pitch to form the tunnel for the players to run through. This was an amazing experience. At half time we paraded around the pitch waving to 9,822 supporters before continuing to cheer them on again for their much improved second half performance, leading to a 20-12 victory for the Chiefs.

Pupils then met the players for signatures and selfies and even some of the parents and staff got in on the act too!  Mr Cooke, Assistant Head of PE and Year 8 and 9 rugby coach, said, "The boys were inspired by meeting the players, talking to them and getting their autograph. It was a great opportunity for our pupils to get a unique insight into the preparations and post-match routines of the Exeter Chiefs."

The trip really is an excellent opportunity to inspire young rugby players to keep playing the game and for them to strive to improve and see what they could become.

Trip organiser, Mr Adrian Avery said, "What a great day! Because of where we live, it can sometimes be really hard to inspire youngsters and keep them motivated to play sport. This is a perfect opportunity for them to see top flight rugby in this country. I have to thank all the team at the Chiefs for a great experience. The players were amazing with the kids (and staff) after the game.  We will definitely be organising another trip next year."
