Great Torrington Year 10 Student Alice Mills (pictured right) is celebrating after winning the 2013 North Devon District Young Chef of the Year competition at Petroc College today.

Alice cooked up for her two course meal cod wrapped with prosciutto ham served with vine tomatoes and small roast potatoes and broccoli with soda bread.  For dessert she prepared mini pots of blackcurrants and raspberries topped with meringue.  Alice on returning to school and telling staff about her day “I was completely overwhelmed when I heard my name, the competition was such a high level and every dish looked amazing".  The judges remarked that Alice was so cool in the kitchen, she had no time problems and every time he looked over at Alice she was just taking it in her stride".

Two Great Torrington students took part and Hannah Heywood (Year 8) was highly commended as being not only one of the youngest chef competing today but the student who demonstrated her calmness to work under pressure, being one of the tidiest chefs in the competition and was always organised and under control in the kitchen. The judges remarked that she is especially one to watch for in the future as she is only in Year 8.  Hannah cooked for her main course chicken bread in a creamy garlic wine sauce served with vegetables and for desert she produced a super sunny lemon cheesecake.

We are so proud of the efforts of all our students that took part in the Rotary Young Chef competition and delighted for Alice and Hannah for reaching the District finals.  We look forward to hearing all about Alice's next adventures in the kitchen at the Rotary County Finals at Exeter College in January 2014.
