This year's winning Youth Speaks team: Lilith Foster-Collins, Nell Gierke and Emily Herbert last night won the local round of the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition at Shebbear College.

Two Great Torrington School teams took part in the first round of Rotary's International Youth Speaks Competition on Thursday 22nd January and both performed splendidly.

The national public speaking competition aims to support and encourage young people to develop their communication skills and formulate ideas on topical subjects.

The girls' team won the first round, with their brilliant performance of a speech entitled: "Is Drone Warfare Immoral?

For all of the pupils involved, standing up and delivering a formal presentation in front of unknown adults is an amazing achievement and we hope they are very proud of themselves, as they quite rightly should be.

Congratulations to all of them and thank you to Miss Smaldon for helping them.  We're already looking forward to the next round of the competition that will take place at the end of February.
