Great Torrington School took 9 athletes, 13 sports leaders and GTS members of Streetz Dance crew to Barnstaple on Wednesday 16th November to take part in the annual Autumn Devon Ability Games at  Tarka Tennis Centre, where athletes from all over the county came together to participate in a range of sporting activities.  The games encourage young people of all abilities to take part and share the positivity of the “Spirit of the Games’ whose values are: Teamwork, Honesty, Respect, Self-Belief, Passion and Determination.

Streetz Dance Crew made it an exciting and lively opening ceremony, they also provided a dance workshop for the whole day. Harry Hendy had the privilege of reading out the School games’ oath as part of the opening ceremony in front of 400 young people from around Devon. There were many sports on offer throughout the day for GTS pupils to try including: archery, street dance, new age curling, wheelchair basketball, golf, table cricket, shooting and a cultural activity.

Students were also very excited to be able to meet and chat to Exmouth based GB Paralympic Swimmer/triathlete, David Hill.  David joined the British Paratriathlon squad in 2013 having come from a swimming background and was Paralympics GB’s youngest athlete at the Athens Games in 2004.

Adrian Avery, School Games Organiser for North Devon, commented, “This is a fantastic event and it is great to see so many young people take part and enjoy sport.  It’s important to provide opportunity for everyone and we are thrilled that so many young people are here at this event.”

Mrs McCulloch, GTS PE Learning Support Assistant went to this year’s game and said, “This was one of the best school trips I’ve attended; the pupils were extremely well behaved, they were enthusiastic and joined in all the activities.  It was lovely to see them enjoying themselves so much and they got a lot out of it personally – Harry read the oath during the opening ceremony in front of a crowd of 400 people which was a very proud moment, and Harlum was so good at wheelchair basketball that he’s joining a club!”

Congratulations to all our GTS representatives.
