National Citizen Service experience for Year 11

Posted on: 22/03/2016

GTS pupils set a new record in the North Devon area as they express the highest interest in the National Citizen Service (NCS) experience.

This amazing opportunity, open to all Year 11 pupils, takes place during the summer holidays and is a programme that helps improve pupils' CV by giving them important skills for work and life that are hard to teach in the classroom alone.  The last two year groups have grasped the challenge and said how much more their confidence grew by taking part, as well as enjoying themselves and making new friends.

The programme runs over 4 weeks and consists of four parts. Firstly, they spend time away from home enjoying instructor-led group activities such as sailing, white water rafting and rock climbing.  Then they learn vital life skills such as budgeting and cooking and also meet with businesses and organisations in the local community.  They go on to plan and pitch for funding for their chosen social action project in their community and make a real difference. Finally, they graduate, receiving a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.

There are a few ways to sign-up to NCS:

- Sign up online at:

- Your son/daughter can pick up a form in the careers office at Great Torrington School, fill out the form completely and return it to the NCS post box (also in the careers office) with full payment included. Cheques made out to 'PETROC'. NCS will then pick up this form from the school and process it as quickly as possible.

- Or give the NCS office a ring on 01271 852429 and they will send out information and get your son/daughter signed up through post.
