Championships 2014 Braunton

Posted on: 17/06/2014

Great Torrington School had 7 representatives at the recent Devon Schools Athletics Championships which took place at Braunton on Saturday 14th June.

Weather conditions could not have been better with the sun shining and little wind. In the Junior Girls category Abi Davey was taking part for the first time and did really well competing against the year above. Abi came 7th in the 100m and then ran a PB in the 200m finishing 5th in her heat but didn't quite make it to the final.

Caitlin Gallagher took to the field competing in the Long Jump and Discus finishing 4th and 6th respectively.  Sister Megan (Megan Gallagher) could come away slightly happier of the two with PB's in both the 75m hurdles and 200m races. Megan finished 4th in her 200m heat just missing out on the final. However in the 75m hurdles Megan won her heat with a new PB then went on to be crowned champion by winning the final in an even faster time bumping her national ranking up to 90th in the Country and gaining selection for the South West Schools.

In the Junior Boys category Callum Vingoe raced in the 300m and finished 3rd in the final with a new PB. The 2 boys in front of him were a year older. Callum's time has moved him up to 135th in the Country for an event that is fairly new to him putting him in a good position for next year.

Harrison East also competing in this category came 4th in both his 80m Hurdles and High Jump battling with some good competitors.

Briony Harris was our sole representative in the Inter Girls category and had a very successful day finishing 2nd in the Shot with a new PB & winning the Discus also with a PB, gaining selection for the South West Schools.

Finally in the Inter Boys category Sam West took to the cage and finished 3rd with a throw just short of a PB.
Well done to all that took part and good luck to Megan and Briony for this Saturdays South West Schools Championships at Yeovil.
