Pupils visited Holsworthy livestock market and the new Holsworthy Agricentre that is currently being built as part of the PEEPS project.

The project is designed to raise ambitions and aspirations of young people and help them make more informed decisions about their future as well as increasing employer links with schools.

Mr James Morrish, auctioneer at Kivells spent the day with pupils and staff from GTS, Bideford College and Holsworthy Community College giving them a tour around the facilities to give them an insight into the agriculture industry and the varied jobs and lifestyle available locally.

They watched the sheep, calves, cattle and dairy sales, where they recorded the prices of animals sold. Mr James Morrish gave them a mathematical challenges relating to sales, prices and profits of livestock sold throughout the market.

It was an interesting peek into the farming world for many of them and to and understand the nature of a business such as Kivells who are the fifth biggest in the country it gave them a grounding of what is available locally.  As even though we are a rural school not all pupils get the opportunity to understand about one of the main local industries to this area.
