John Hegley encourages fun with language!

John Hegley is well loved by audiences all over the world for his lively and innovative performance poetry, comedy and songs; on stage, television, radio and his numerous books.  Before his performance at the Plough Arts Centre in Torrington, John delighted year 8 students with two creative word workshops.

The pupils quickly learned the techniques needed to create and perform their own acrostics, poems and songs.  John accompanied them on his mandolin-type instrument (called Steve) and recited and sang his own poems and songs.  Themes ranged from the humorous to the severe, Devon to declining world fish stocks.

“I really enjoyed how John showed us how to explore words by thinking in different ways, poetry can be expressive, fun and serious if you allow your ideas to flow and flourish.” “Better than lessons!”
