WHAT is the subject about?
The course offers a unique opportunity to gain knowledge
of the catering and food industries and develop practical
skills. You will plan and make dishes considering healthy
eating guidelines and catering for a range of diets. You
will learn about the function of ingredients, the importance
of hygiene, safety and sustainability within the catering
industries.
WHY should I choose this subject?
Anyone with an interest in food who is keen to learn the
skills and knowledge required for a career in the health,
applied science or food and hospitality sectors.
WHEN and HOW am I assessed?
Assessed through controlled practical task (60%); you will
research, plan, make a range of dishes from a selection
of set topics. The task will be started in year 10 and
completed in year 11, with a final written exam (40%).
WHICH subjects should I have an aptitude in?
It is essential that you have shown a key interest in
cooking and science at KS3, can work hygienically, safely
and complete written tasks well.
There is a termly fee
associated with this course, currently £15.00. You
will be required to obtain your own ingredients for
assessment work.
WHERE could this subject take me in the future?
Catering and Hospitality Apprenticeships; Level 3
Diplomas; Degrees in Food Science, Nutritionist,
Dietician, Food Teacher etc.
