Devon Ability
Games
Once again Barnstaple
hosted the Devon
Autumn Ability Games at
the Tarka Tennis Centre
in November.
This year it was very
fitting that GTS pupil
Luke , had the privilege to
read out the School
games oath as part of the
opening ceremony. In
front of 500 young people
from around North
Devon. This will be
Luke’s last year of
competing at the games
and we are very proud off
what he has achieved,
Adrian Avery, School
Games Organiser for
North Devon, said “This is
a fantastic event and it is
great to see the support
of local schools. It’s
important to provide
everyone with the
opportunity to take part in
sport and we are so
thrilled that so many
young people are
participating in this event
today”.
The event starts with an
opening ceremony and
features table cricket,
rowing, archery, mini golf,
cycling and more. A
medal ceremony brings
the day to a close.

Year 9 Football
The year took a turn for the worst in the first game of the season when the

side
,
who have been one of our most successful at GTS
,
lost their opening game
of the season against Bideford. Fortunately
,
extra training sessions and a stern
talking to rectified some issues and they went on to win their remaining pool
games and semi-final with some comfort. The final again saw us matched against
Bideford
,
at Bideford, and again unfortunately an excellent virtuoso performance
from Bideford’s striker stole away our ambitions of being crowned North Devon
Champions for the second time in three years
,
losing to the odd goal in 5 in some
horrific gale force winds.
Due to our status as a small school, we struggle against our ‘bigger’ counter-
parts as a general rule and the county cup this year proved no different. Drawn
against last years’ finalists (away) in round one, saw our boys facing several Exe-
ter academy players and a fantastic game of football ensued. We did lose by one
goal on the day but gained a lot of respect in the process with the superb applica-
tion of the team and some excellent individual performances too. Some excellent
performances from: Jack Magarotto as captain, Nathan Souster in midfield with
him, Will Bright up front, Bailey Stubbings on the wing and Jack Hill in defence,
have given the team a very strong spine and give us good hope as we continue in
the National Cup we have entered and again are doing well in. This group of play-
ers reached the quarter final stage last year and we are hoping to go at least one
stage better this year. We are into round 5 and welcome Cape Cornwall in the
next round in what should prove to be another close game.
