Year 8 Football
A tremendous start to the year saw the
Y
ear
8’s book their place in the North Devon semi-
finals with ease
,
without dropping a point in
the 4 games of the pool stages. A tight and
nervy affair against Pilton School swung both
ways in the semi-final
, but
saw GTS make
fewer mistakes on the night to book their
place in the final against a notoriously strong
Bideford side (last years’ winners). No
Cinderella story here though I’m afraid, after
a plucky start and an excellent free kick from
Ben Brown to put GTS ahead, Bideford
(controversially with home advantage in the
final) used their superior tenacity and
strength to good effect and came out
comfortable winners in the end. On the bright
side
,
the
Y
ear 8 team are still firing away in a
National Cup where we have reached round
5
,
beating strong teams such as Stoke
Damerel (Plymouth) and are hoping for a
strong cup run to round off another good year
for the boys.

Football News—Year 7
This year saw a tough start to GTS football for our Year 7s. Having no side in the
local football team meant that many of the pupils had little match experience com-
pared to some of the schools’ stronger rivals in the North Devon area. Head
coach, Mr Cooke, however, was delighted with their application in training and in
the strides they made game by game in the North Devon Schools’ League. This
has a somewhat fairy-tale ending we are delighted to say, as the boys went to the
North Devon Schools 5 a-side tournament and despite not registering a win up
until that evening, went on to remain unbeaten in all 7 games and become North
Devon 5 a-side champions. A true underdog story! They will now represent North
Devon at a South West Schools tournament in Torquay in the new year. We wish
them good luck.
Netball
All teams thoroughly enjoyed the Netball
League this term with numerous matches
against other local schools. The teams train
2, sometimes 3 times a week and have
shown huge improvements from the
beginning of the term to the end in
November. The most successful teams were
the 10’s and 11’s but with the training that is
taking place we are hoping that other teams
will improve on their positions in the North
Devon Schools Netball league tables. The
year 10’s worked well together and just need
to remain consistent throughout. The year
9’s had a slow start to the league and
finished VERY strongly and the Year 8’s are
beginning to show promise in training. The
PE department were really impressed with
the Year 11’s performances on league nights
as narrowly missed out on the top spot due to
drawing with Pilton. Well Done Year 11’s.
