Six Year 8 pupils from Great Torrington School were
celebrating last Thursday (22
nd
November) as they won the
Institution of Engineering and Technology‘s (IET) Faraday
Engineering Challenge at Braunton Academy.
Each team had to use their knowledge and understanding of
science, design and technology and maths to respond to the
challenge and design and produce a communication system
to aid in a disaster situation. Pupils needed to transmit a
message across the room with a device which could be
scaled up to use in a real life situation.
The team was assessed in all aspects of the task including
planning, design, budgeting and finally the success of
transmitting the message.
The challenge develops pupils‘ skills in Design and
Technology, Maths and Science with an aim to encourage their interest in engineering in the future.
At the end of the day pupils were definitely inspired by engineering and they said they would now consider it as a career. Pupils said, ―It
has been fun doing this challenge. When we were making the product, we had to take every little detail into consideration‖.
Mr Quance, Maths teacher from Great Torrington School said ―The day was amazing. When I saw the challenge and saw everyone‘s
response to working out how to come up with the solution to the challenge it demonstrated some sound thinking and problem solving.
These are all good skills that they need for life and work situations. The pupils really did themselves and the school proud. Thank you to
Braunton Academy for hosting an inspiring event for the area‖. Congratulations to Max Ash
