Win for GTS against West Buckland
Youth Speaks
On Tuesday 11
February, this year‟s
winning Youth Speaks team: Amy Cornish,
Katie Huxtable and Beth Challice,
competed in the regional round of the
competition at The Barnstaple Hotel. The
girls‟ team had previously won the first
round with their brilliant performance of a
speech entitled: “Female Stereotypes in
Children‟s Literature”.
They were „pipped to the post‟ in the
second round, by some very tough
competition. However, their achievement –
in standing up and delivering a difficult
formal presentation in front of hundreds
of unknown adults – is not to be
underestimated! Congratulations to all
three of them and thanks to Miss Smaldon
for helping them rehearse over the last
few months. We‟re already thinking about
next year‟s competition!
In early March West Buckland School Chess Club recently welcomed Great Torrington School to a
return Chess match. Friendly matches were played with much coaching going on after the event as
tactics were shared. Mr Stanier said, “It‟s an enjoyable event and the pupils enjoyed the
atmosphere.” Our pupils are certainly developing their chess skills and they are enjoying the social
side of meeting and chatting to students from opposing schools.
