On Thursday 26
February we saw the return, for the third year, of the North Devon Secondary Sports Hall
Athletics Final, with athletes aged between 11 and 13. This was a fiercely fought competition with both
track and field events including; long jump, shot, speed bounce, long distance races and sprints, finishing
with an obstacle and hurdle relay.
The winners for the third year running were Great Torrington School with only a point splitting the second
place Ilfracombe and third place Bideford schools. Both Great Torrington and Ilfracombe are off to the
County Sports Hall Athletics Competition on the 12
March as part of the School Games. The
determination and enthusiasm from all athletes was highly commended and with two more County records
broken it shows the hard work schools have put in over the past year.

Spring finally finds the strength to strangle winter’s
Hold; happily returning in glory.
Bursting blossoming buds begin to show.
As the windy warmth enters, the bleak sun blooms.
Suddenly the summer sun awakens,
Slyly smoothing spring’s unsteady spirit.
Flamboyant flowers explode in hedgerows like
Timid toddlers turning to teenagers.
Autumn approaches, dreary dampness spreads.
Bloated conkers split their silk-lined spiky coats.
Vigorously shaken trees are stripped bare;
Misty swirls and bonfire smells fill the air.
Winter stiffens and stills the drab muted earth.
Miniscule snowflakes perch, posed on the grass.
Broken night, starry sky, tomorrow…cold.
Withered trees engraved with decorative diamonds.
