The annual school “Post 16
Opportunities Evening” was
a great success.
Year 9, 10 and Year 11 pupils were invited to attend the event
with their parents and carers who drew upon the expertise of 24
different organisations. Many of our local colleges, employers and
training providers attended the event, joined by newcomers, such
as Sainsbury’s.
Families had a chance to meet with representatives from the armed forces and police force, NHS and care services,
retail, construction, engineering,
local council, accountancy, business admin, customer service and apprenticeships
as well as general advice from local colleges.
Both training providers and local employers ” were impressed at how busy Great Torrington School opportunities
evening was and how it was one of the best in the area where pupils asked very knowledgeable and enquiring
questions”. Employers commented that they could tell GTS pupils are well informed about career opportunities
and the routes into their chosen pathway. They were impressed at the level of careers guidance that the pupils
obviously receive.
The evening was lively and both representatives and pupils had a great time in their interactions with each other.
Harry a pupil at GTS “I know what direction I want to take, I didn’t really know which way to go, my goal now is to
obtain an Engineering apprenticeship. I am predicted good grades, so I have a focus now of what I need to achieve
I can work my way through the apprenticeship route to gain my qualifications”.
Sandra Peters Personalised Learning Manager from GTS “Every year we get a buzz out of the evening, we are proud
that our guests recognise the impact that Great Torrington School 3Rs programme has on its pupils in raising their
awareness about the many different routes into career pathways and the amount of options that are available to
them”.
