WHAT is the subject about?
The course offers a unique opportunity to gain knowledge
of the catering and food industries and develop practical
skills. You will plan and make dishes considering healthy
eating guidelines and catering for a range of diets. You
will also learn the importance of hygiene, safety and
sustainability within the catering industries.
WHY should I choose this subject?
Anyone with an interest in food who is keen to learn the
skills and knowledge required for a career in the catering
industry, food and food service.
WHEN and HOW am I assessed?
You will be assessed through two controlled practical
tasks and will research, plan, make and evaluate a range
of dishes from a selection of set topics. The first task will
be completed in year 10 and the second in year 11, along
with a final written exam (60% coursework, 40% exam).
WHICH subjects should I have an aptitude in?
It is essential that you have shown a key interest in
cooking at KS3, are able to work hygienically and safely
and complete written tasks to the best of your ability. You
will be required to bring ingredients.
WHERE could this subject take me in the future?
Catering and Hospitality Apprenticeships; AS/A2 Home
Economics, Food Technology; Degrees in Food Science,
Nutritionist, Dietician, Food Teacher etc.
