All pupils will follow a GCSE pathway. The most able pupils will study three separate
Science GCSE courses; GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics.
Everyone else will study GCSE Combined Science, which is worth two GCSEs.
Separate Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) GCSEs
This pathway is designed to meet the needs of the most able in Science who are
considering an academic pathway in the future, likely to include AS/A2 level study in
Science disciplines. This involves more Science teaching than the double Science
option, the teaching and learning will therefore be more demanding and at a faster
pace to reflect this. ‘Triple Science’ includes the same material which is covered in
the Combined Science modules, but with some extra content to extend the pupils’
studies. This is all examined at the end of Year 11, we anticipate this consisting of
six x 1 hour 15 minute exams; two Biology, two Chemistry and two Physics. Each of
the papers will assess knowledge and understanding from distinct topic areas.
There is no longer any coursework in the new Science GCSEs, all practical work will
be examined via the final exam papers, of which there are twenty-four compulsory
practicals (three from each discipline) that will be taught to pupils, any of which will
appear in the final exam papers.
Combined Science GCSE —Trilogy
This pathway leads to pupils gaining a qualification worth two GCSEs. The course
consists of each of the three Science disciplines, Biology, Chemistry and Physics,
each of which are examined at the end of year 11. We anticipate this consisting of 6
x 1 hour 15 minute exams; two Biology, two Chemistry and two Physics. Each of the
papers will assess knowledge and understanding from distinct topic areas. There is
no longer any coursework in the new Science GCSEs, all practical work will be
examined via the final exam papers, of which there are sixteen compulsory
practicals that will be taught to pupils, any of which will appear in the final exam
papers.
